Culturally Inclusive Counselling
At Umi to Yama, we honour the diverse cultural identities, histories, and lived experiences of every individual who walks through our doors. We recognize that mental health is deeply shaped by culture, community, language, and systemic context. We believe that healing happens most fully when people feel seen, heard, and respected in the fullness of who they are. We are committed to creating a space where clients feel safe exploring how their cultural identity intersects with their mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. This includes addressing experiences of racism, intergenerational trauma, migration, displacement, cultural stigma around mental health, and the impact of navigating multiple cultural worlds.
- Indigenous Cultural Awareness: We are committed to walking alongside Indigenous clients in ways that honour Indigenous worldviews, resilience, and healing practices. Our therapists approach this work with cultural humility, recognizing the ongoing impacts of colonialism and intergenerational trauma. We support clients in connecting with their cultural strengths and, where appropriate, integrate traditional knowledge and holistic approaches to wellness that honour the interconnectedness of mind, body, spirit, and land.
- Multicultural Competence: Many of our clients come from im/migrant, newcomer, and refugee backgrounds and face unique challenges related to identity, belonging, systemic discrimination, and acculturation. We take the time to understand these lived realities, including the pressures of adapting to a new culture, maintaining connection to one’s roots, and navigating intergenerational differences within families. Our therapists strive to hold space for these experiences with empathy, respect, and awareness of the broader systems at play.
- Language and Communication: We recognize that language is more than just words—it’s a carrier of meaning, emotion, and cultural expression. We aim to reduce language-related barriers in therapy by offering culturally competent communication approaches that are mindful of both verbal and non-verbal nuances.
We don’t assume—we ask, we listen, and we learn. Our approach is grounded in cultural humility: a lifelong process of learning from our clients, reflecting on our own biases, and remaining open to feedback and growth. At Umi to Yama, we are deeply committed to co-creating therapeutic relationships that affirm cultural identity, empower individuals, and promote healing in all its forms.
