Youth Counselling (13+)
Adolescence is a time of profound transformation—physically, emotionally, and socially. It’s a period filled with new experiences, growing independence, and sometimes, overwhelming internal and external pressures. At Umi to Yama, we understand that navigating these years can be challenging—not just for youth, but for the families and communities that support them. That’s why we offer youth counselling services tailored to meet teens where they are, providing a safe and supportive space to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Our team of skilled therapists takes a strengths-based, trauma-sensitive approach, which means we focus on what’s going well, acknowledge past and present hardships, and empower youth to build on their innate capacity for resilience and growth.
We work collaboratively with young people to help them build emotional awareness, develop healthy coping strategies, strengthen their relationships, and gain confidence in who they are.
- Mental Health Support: Many of the youth we work with experience anxiety, depression, or ongoing struggles with low self-worth. We support teens in understanding and managing these mental health challenges by helping them name their emotions, explore what lies underneath, and develop tools for navigating stress and emotional overwhelm. Whether it’s social anxiety, panic attacks, or feeling persistently down or disconnected, we help teens find clarity, connection, and hope.
- Life Transitions: Changes—whether expected or sudden—can be hard to manage during adolescence. We support youth through a wide range of life transitions, including academic stress, changing schools, shifting peer dynamics, family separation or divorce, relocation, or preparing for the future after high school. We help teens make sense of these transitions and develop confidence in their ability to adapt, problem-solve, and move forward with purpose.
- Behavioural Concerns: When young people are overwhelmed, it often shows up through behaviour. We work with youth who may be struggling with anger, impulsivity, or difficulty managing big emotions. Through compassionate conversation and practical tools, we help them improve emotional regulation, explore underlying needs or triggers, and build healthier ways of expressing themselves and resolving conflict.
At the heart of our work is relationship-building. We believe that connection is the key to healing and growth. By creating a space that is rooted in safety, trust, and especially humour, we help youth feel seen and understood—often for the first time. We work at their pace, in their language, and with deep respect for their lived experiences.
